An Octane`s Tale: Slow and Steady Gets the Job Done
Our aging Octane (known as “Oscar”) features a 180 Mhz R12000 CPU and SGI’s lackluster JVM implementation for IRIX. At this point, Oscar has set the record at BMI for Slowest JIVA Client Ever: the average JIVA Client runs at around 392 MFLOPS, and the fastest machines are running at 471 MFLOPS.
Poor old Oscar is crawling along at less than 24 MFLOPS.
Surprisingly, he isn’t in last place for the amount of work done: he has currently done 3417 million floating point operations and is in 195th place. There are over 100 other clients that have done less work, simply because they don’t have as much idle time as Oscar does.
Oscar’s lead will probably decrease as time moves on, but this definitely shows that a slow computer with a high availability can go a lot for your JIVA Grid.
