A note to 7290 and 7520 Users

Pulse is currently not stable on the 7290 and 7520 BlackBerry models. We are working to resolve this and expect to have a update that is stable on these models by December 18th

BES-related Errors

These errors should only apply to users of the BlackBerry Enterprise Service (BES)

I can login on with Pulse, but it presently reports "Caught exception net.rim.device.cldc.io.ippp.SocketBaseIOException:Exceeded the limit of number of bytes allowed per connection"
BES only allows the transfer of 128 kilobytes of data per BlackBerry connection by default. Contact your IT administrator and requirest that they raise this limit substantially.

Windows Checklist

Verify Pulse COM Port Number
  • Go to Start Menu->Control Panel->Bluetooth Devices.
  • Select your phone from the devices panel, click properties, then services.

"Dial-up networking (DUN) COMxx" should be checked.
xx will be the number of your COM port (for instance, 11).

Double check your dialup networking settings
Go to Start Menu->Connect to->your dialup connection name
  • User Name: should be your proxy server user name
  • Password: should be set to your proxy server password
  • Dial: should say username@proxyserver, for instance, marley@pulse.brainmurmurs.com

Click on the "Properties" button

  • General Tab:
    • Make certain that the modem selected matches the com port number from above (11, in this hypothetical case)
    • Click the "Configure" button
      • Set the maximum speed to 230400
      • Enable hardware flow control
      • Disable modem error control
      • Disable modem compression
      • Hit the OK button
    • Click the "Options" Tab

      • _ Include Windows logon domain (leave unchecked)
      • x Prompt for phone number (check)
    • Click the "Security" Tab
      • Typical (recommended settings) should be selected.
      • Everything else should be unselected.
    • Click the "Networking" Tab
      • Type of dialup server I am calling should say "PPP: Windows/95/98/NT4/2000, Internet"
      • Click the Settings button
        • Enable LCP extensions should be checked
        • Enable software compression should be checked
        • Negotiate multi-link for single link connections should NOT be checked.
        • Hit the OK button

General Tips

  • When connecting, keep an eye on your blackberry
    • If you have never connected to the internet with Pulse before you will be asked to grant Pulse permission to establish a connection to the proxy server by your Blackberry.
    • You need to grant this permission in order for pulse to work.

    • When the bluetooth connection is established, the blackberry's Gateway Connection status should quickly switch from "Authenticating" to "Online."

This means that the Pulse has successfully negotiated a connection with the proxy server. At this point your dialup networking software should begin negotiating a PPP link with the proxy server. Problems at this point may be due to an incorrect user name and password in your dialup networking settings.
