J9 JVM Installation

JVM J9 is a bit of a chore to install, but it remains a superior JVM for the Pocket PC Platform.   As of October 2004, there still lacks an easy solution.   Here are the steps that you'll need to take to make sure J9 installed correctly:

Part I - Obtain the J9 JVM From IBM

  1. Launch your preferred web browser and go to http://www-306.ibm.com/software/wireless/wctme_fam/

  2. Select "WebSphere Everyplace Micro Environment"

  3. Select "Try Workplace client Technology, Micro Edition 5.7

  4. Select "Trial: IBM Workplace Client Technology, Micro Edition 5.7.1

5. Select a language, and press continue

6. You'll probably need to register in order to download the JVM, fill out the form & submit

7. There will be many items on the downloads page, find "WebSphere Everyplace Micro Environment MIDP 2.0 for HP iPAQ PC h5550 (Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC), and download.   This is a rather large file (38MB) so it may be a few minutes.

Part II - Install the J9 VM

1. When the download is complete, find the weme-wm2003-arm-midp20-5.7.1-P-20040723-1833.exe file and run it.

2. Follow the directions on screen
