A Renaissance Approach to Science and Engineering

Rocket science is an intensely interdisciplinary field, with a breadth reminiscent of the studies of Aristotle, Da Vinci, Galileo, and Newton. Although many graduates may emerge from college with a particular area of concentration, all students of the field are expected to master a broad range of topics including physics, mathematics, gas dynamics, space plasma physics, relativistic mechanics, numerical methods, and more.
The curriculum of the renaissance engineer emphasizes, among other things, the ability to integrate ideas and information from different sources. A 'Renaissance Engineer' must possess a broad and deep technical knowledge, creativity, excellent communication skills, a sense of aesthetics, the ability to work in interdisciplinary teams, an aptitude for lifelong learning, a concern for the environment, and sensitivity to social, cultural and individual variability. New problems are modeled using a first principles approach and dimensional analysis.

More than anything, a pronounced emphasis is placed on acquiring the ability to model and solve arbitrary, unexpected problems. Graduates are ingrained early on with a responsibility to understand and model the world, constantly hearing things from their instructors like:

  • 'you are rocket scientists, you should know why the sky is blue'
  • 'estimate how tall a mountain can be'
  • 'if a comet is coming down out of the sky, you should be able to get out of your car, whip out an envelope, and work out whether or not you are in any actual danger on the hood of your car while the rest of the populace races about in a blind panic'
  • 'derive the rocket equation from first principles'

  • This philosophy is part of the Brain Murmurs corporate culture. We take ownership of our work, and strive to understand the relationship of our work to its surroundings. This sort of proactive systems engineering approach to work is furthered by an ethos of personal responsibility and an emphasis on strong communication between teams and team members.
