Brain Murmurs worked with RDP Associates to produce Orion, a modular GPS post-processing system for the Nielsen nPod device. We worked directly with RDP to define and collect functional requirements and then handled all aspects of the development process ourselves, including project management.
Brain Murmurs handled all aspects of the development effort. This included project management, architecture, design, development, build system engineering, configuration management, testing, and integration.

The software we developed for RDP is used to accurately track the paths of individuals based on imperfect GPS position data and external cues such as location specific topological information. The application reads and analyzes GPS data recorded by the nPod device and outputs post processed position information as standard NMEA RMC messages.
The three primary tasks of Orion were:
  • Data enhancement
This was achieved through the use of digital filters, geographical constraint, and improved satellite ephemeris data.

  • Data error detection and correction
This was achieved through Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitoring (RAIM) and velocity based multipath filtering.

  • Data synthesis
Clock drift modeling techniques and approximation techniques allow us to synthesize reasonable data from statistical data and available satellite pseudoranges in the absence of an nPod GPS fix.
This distributed data processing system is the heart of the Nielsen Outdoor GPS-based rating system for rating outdoor advertising. This system is used for cleaning up or synthesizing accurate data of subjects in dense urban canyons through low-level analysis of satellite data and receiver information as well as a fuzzy logic system designed to constrain data to known streets and other urban features.
