IRIX is a System V-based Unix computer operating system with BSD extensions developed by Silicon Graphics (SGI) to run natively on their 32- and 64-bit MIPS architecture workstations and servers.
IRIX has particularly strong support for 3D graphics, video, and high-bandwidth bulk data transfer. IRIX was one of the first Unix flavors to feature a graphical user interface for the main desktop environment, and was widely used in the computer animation industry and for scientific visualization due to its extremely good performance with 3D graphics.

In a press release on 6 September 2006, SGI announced the end of the MIPS/IRIX line. Production will end on 29 December 2006 and the last orders will be fulfilled by March 2007

Daniel used IRIX-based SGI workstations and servers at Lockheed Martin Astronautics in his Stardust test lab.

Brain Murmurs has been a member of the SGI Developers group since 2002. We mourn the passing of this once great operating system.
